Infection Injuries and Complication

Abstract
This paper is primarily concerned with the local and systemic complications of injections utilized to medicate to administer fluids to a patient population.
The administration of various therapeutic agents by intramuscular and intravenous injections is a common and practical procedure in modern medicine. With widespread .use of these methods of administration the incidence of injection complications seems to be increasing.
The complications of intramuscular injection include abscess and cyst formation, lingering pain, intravascular injections, periostitis and peripheral nerve injuries with consequent neuropathy. Antibiotics are the chief offenders, particularly chloramphenicol and tetracycline. Careful localization of the injection site is of primary importance.
The increasingly frequent use of plastic catheters for medication or infusion of fluids intravenously has been accompanied by a increased number of injuries and complications associated with the methods of inserting and removing them, and with their protracted residence withni vascular system. Among them local hematoma, thrombophlebitis, and extravasation of infused fluids are common but easily can be managed. And catheter embolism, cardiac perforation, and thoracic duct injuries are unusual but serious in their untoward effects.
Not all of these complications can be prevented. However, a knowledge of the anatomy of the various injection sites, plus careful technique in carrying out the injection, should reduce the complications attributable to faulty procedure.
